Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Dental problems tend to start small and then get worse over time, which can lead to painful and expensive consequences. Thankfully, many common issues are also highly preventable. Having a routine checkup and professional cleaning every 6 months allows our team to monitor your condition so that if any areas of concern arise, like weakening enamel, we can apply the appropriate solutions before detrimental damage takes place.

For example, if you have a cavity, we’ll remove any decayed materials and fill your tooth with composite resin to restore its functionality. This can stop disease from penetrating the tender nerves and tissues inside your tooth to avoid a potentially invasive and costly emergency root canal later.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

Although it may vary slightly depending on your unique circumstances, you can expect the following from your dental checkup:

  • Updated history. We will need to verify your current medical history and list any supplements or medications that you’re taking.
  • We’ll visually scan your teeth, gums, bite alignment, and any existing dental work (like dental crowns, bridges, etc.)
  • Oral cancer screening. During this standard part of your appointment, we test the soft tissues in your mouth for signs of cancer.
  • We like to take X-rays at least once annually to ensure nothing is happening beneath the surface that we cannot see.
  • Treatment plans. If any issues are discovered, our dentists will walk you through the suggested solutions.
  • Q & A. You’ll have a chance to ask any questions, like what to expect from the suggested procedures or how to improve your at-home oral hygiene routine.

Even if you brush and floss twice daily, there are areas in your mouth that are harder to see or access. Our team has the experience and technology to thoroughly clean places that you might have missed at home. First, we’ll remove any plaque and tartar buildup from between your teeth and along your gums using special dental instruments. This can decrease the chances of having cavities, gum disease, or even halitosis (chronic bad breath).

Next, we’ll floss your teeth before polishing them with a special brush to remove any minor surface stains and blemishes. You’ll be left with a sparkling smile that you’re proud to show off!
